The Apology Tour: Day 4 - Obama in the Mosh Pit!

What I've become is so burdensome… I’m Just A Girl by No Doubt

It’s Day 4 on the apology tour (Dude, what the hell is the apology tour?) and here we are touring the southland with the Delicate Ds like Daisy Jane (America), Daniella (John Butler), Daphne (Django Reinhardt), Waltz for Debby (Bill Evans), Delia (Dave Alvin), Delia’s Gone (Johnny Cash), Delilah (Tom Jones), Denise (Blondie), Diana (Paul Anka), My Diane (Beach Boys), Oh, Donna (10cc), Donna (Richie Valens), Diane (Miles Davis), Dinah (Red Nichols), Dindi (Astrud Gilberto), Dear Dolores (Ellis Marsalis), Dora Maar (Virgil Thompson), Doralice (João Gilberto), Shoot Doris Day (Super Furry Animals), as well as a Dark Eyed Woman (Spirit), a Dark Sweet Lady (George Harrison), the Delta Lady (Leon Russell or Joe Cocker), a Diamond Girl (Seals & Crofts) and those retro Disney Girls (Beach Boys).

But it’s Daria by Cake from their 1996 release, Fashion Nugget, that we’re singing the praises of today. Daria is a throwback to new wave circa 1980. It conjures up images of Blackies, a grungy little club on Main Street in Venice, CA (now the location of Wolfgang Puck’s Chinois on Main). It, along with other little dives like Club 88, Hong Kong Café and Madame Wongs (both in Chinatown) were booking an amazing collection of punk/new wave/ska bands like X, The Germs, Plimsouls, Suburban Lawns, The Go-Go’s, Dead Kennedy’s, The Plugs, Fear, The Nu-Kat’s (fronted by Demi Moore’s first husband, Freddie) and my cousin Jeff’s band, The Brainiacs. Listen to that great, guitar riff – it just screams out sharkskin suit and narrow tie copped from my dad’s 50’s collection.

And then the chorus, wow that's catchy. This belongs on a great upbeat, party mix, but clear out the furniture cuz the mosh pit could open up at any time.

I knew a Daria once – she was a complex ball of neurotic energy – but I just loved saying her name, it just rolled off the tongue really nicely.
